Serious Team Building ~ Who says you can't have fun addressing serious issues? UFI President Mike Linville led us well through group activities and individual meetings here in Kiev March 8th to 15th. We really had a wonderfully warm and productive team building and planning time with him. Clearly he too felt loved and energized returning to his difficult task in the US, just as we all felt closer and better equipped here in Kiev. Our little challenge pictured here took an embarrassing-to-some 50 minutes! to “untangle” and much was learned through the problem solving actions and comments, and during the discussion afterwards. (Once all of us were connected by our interpretation of Mike's verbal instruction, no hands were allowed to be loosened to form the desired circle. Perhaps we were allowed to quit but no one did, though at times the laughter just about “undid” us.)
New Beginnings Again! 3 Year Program NOW in Rovna ~A brand new Ukraine Family Institute class began March 29th! Yes! Our first extension site is happening right now with module 1 being taught in this city of Rovna, an overnight train ride (as usual) west of Kyiv. Unlike our inaugural class January 2003 here in Kyiv where Ron of course did all the teaching, this module 1 includes some “team teaching” as well. Such is the growth and progress of our staff. This new group consists of 49 students accepted by UFI and able to cover some of the costs, even though all struggle financially. (Sadly, some felt they had to decline acceptance due to costs even though it is very minimal and no charge for the teaching.) Pray for the coming together of strangers from various denominations to begin a 3 year journey of sometimes disturbing but ultimately wonderful spiritual discovery. “Life changing” summarizes our present student views to the program. (See past Kyiv Callings or Ron and Linda's website for testimonies: http://www.wellspringoflife.com/id66.htm ) We pray the same happens for every class of UFI students. It is also a view expressed by our staff, and as Operations Manager Artyom Kluchnikof pointed out, the changes in him working at UFI are both wonderful and scary. He said that “with increased knowledge comes increased responsibility before God!” As for these newest students, the application process was refined even further so we anticipate excellent , specifically motivated students and a more than disgruntled "evil one" providing opposition. Please pray protection, strength, UNITY (blending/bonding of students with students and all with the staff). It was a scary exciting time having our inaugural class January 2003, and we have all come to love these “Kyiv students” (from all across Ukraine and some from Russia) so much and are so amazed at God's work, that we feel a similar good nervousness starting another new class of students. Pray for Mike Linville (Indiana) in his lone ranger sacrificial continuation of raising funds for UFI. We all want to change the “lone ranger” aspect. Do pray for finances for us, UFI, and for the students, as just before day one in Rovna, UFI received news of a dear major donor suffering financial setbacks such that he can no longer continue support. As well, upon arriving in Rovna, our excellent operations manager Artyom was faced with surprise administrative challenges involving finances. There are always challenges. We are grateful for this previous donor's part in past support and present prayer support and pray God continues to provide for him even apart from UFI. We press on in faith, work, and prayer, looking to God for all provision particularly now financially for all of UFI. God is obviously continuing to bless the hearts of eager Ukrainians. Pray that Ron and I are able to find time and wisdom to follow up on the people and tasks that came to mind as possible ways God might enable us help Mike and for all of us together to continue God's work in the former Soviet Union.
Canadians Visiting! Now! Even before we get back from Rovna, Jake Tamminga and his pastor Paul Aasman will arrive, Lord willing, in Kyiv. (It's an April 1-7 visit) Please pray, for in spite of great effort on our part and theirs to plan, and a lot of good details lined up, it is our and their experience that the only thing truly predictable in Ukraine is unpredictability! You HAVE to be flexible to survive in good health and humour! Please pray that God give us all a wonderful time of sharing ministry blessings and challenges, enjoy warm fellowship with western and Ukrainian Christians, and catch some of Kyiv's history, culture, and maybe Spring sunshine too!
Our Children Visiting? Soon ~ Adam (18) would love to, with a very special female friend (who sounds wonderful) but alas, Angela (24) is the only one who's work and savings allow her to actually go for it. She is also the only one of our 3 who has never been here. So, she and we excitedly look forward to Mid-May Merriment here in Kiev. She's always loved children and still wants to become a paediatrician and minister perhaps in (an) orphanage(s). Dawna continues to colour, cut, and otherwise alter heads of hair at hairdressing school and work part time in the “Harris” doctors' office. (All 3 Harris children work there.) She has no particular desire to return to Kiev even though it is teeming with style and creativity that cannot be squelched even in poverty. Canada, not Kyiv-Called.
Recap on Most Urgent Needs ~ Hearts: Pray for unity, health, and lots of exciting heart awakening for this brand new set of students right now in Rovna, and Lord willing, new ones in Sumi April 25-30. Funding: Pray that God replenishes and also expands Mike's donor base for UFI and that all of us remain prayerful and strong in faith, diligence, and health in the face of this recent drastic drop in financial support. Workload: This is the heaviest month of teaching so far for Ron, even before counting all the teaching and training of his associates that he does continuously in the UFI office. Last month was busy and he is teaching UFI students now, then at a separate Bible Institute mornings for 2 weeks here in Kiev, then Sumi Ukraine. (There are other very exciting requests being negotiated but I exercise great restraint in saying “It is too early to report on that. Sorry! Pray!”) We plan, step out, and walk in faith. Pray for sensitivity and obedience to God; boldness without presumption.
Recap on God's Blessing ~ Our 2nd year students press on in gratitude, and deepening knowledge, love, and ministry. These last couple of months many new students in and outside of Ukraine Family Institute have studied God's Word through our UFI staff, and new classes are specifically scheduled. That our team is so bright, efficient, loving, and strong, is amazing. Such teachable hearts and persevering servant attitudes are a special blessing. Thank you dear friends, and thanks be to God.
