Here We GROW again!
Praise God! In cold December we warmly welcomed 3 new Teaching Associates to our Ukraine Family Institute staff. As well, though she did very well as an insightful, wise Teaching Associate, Valya has changed hats, preferring now to help Operations Manager Artyom
Later in this newsletter ~
more on these Three New Team Members:
Pastor-Electrician VICTOR, Lawyer-Musician
MARIA, Teacher-Musician TATIANA … But first …
Defining Moment? in the history of Biblical Counselling in Ukraine ~ She is 75 and her husband of less than a year is soon to be 79. “She” is Dr. Ursula Muller-Eberhard, a pioneer in Biblical Counselling in Ukraine who had faithfully laboured alone here, planting seeds since 1995, and who had prayed for a successor. Would you believe Ursula studied at CCEF as Ron did? (Christian Counselling & Educational Foundation: across the street from Westminster Seminary, Philadelphia area USA). She also led us to our dear TA Sergei, and several others presently at various stages of UFI involvement. “The moment” was when four members of the UFI team joined Ursula at a sanatorium conference centre outside of Kyiv to conduct a training conference in biblical counselling for Ukrainian leaders of Campus Crusade (Ukraine for Christ). Since our counselling training has not been approved as part of CC theological curriculum, there was no funding from the regional office (Budapest). The students themselves were required to cover their expenses. It is significant that “Ukraine for Christ” invited us and promoted this counselling training conference among national leaders - persuading them of the benefits of such a course. The 42 who attended paid their own expenses and also paid for accommodations and food for the two teachers. Praise God! They travelled from various cities and towns across Ukraine to Pusha Vaditza (just outside of Kyiv, 90 minutes ride from our flat). During these 8 days (January 8-16) there were about 30 hours of scheduled lectures and counselling workshops, free time and preparation time for the students. This was truly a “PASSING THE BATON, defining moment”. Ron felt very emotionally moved to be the successor that pioneer Ursula had prayed for. He and she co-taught last week, as she willingly accepted the big challenge of teaching from his lecture outline after years of using her own materials. This was the first time they taught together. Could it be the last? - only God knows. She also continually led Ron and the team to God's throne in prayer regarding personal matters of Crusade students, struggles that some of the students had with new but critical points of practical theology, and the need to be creative and flexible as a teaching team. That any inward change is by God's grace was felt by all. We are so thankful for our team of prayer warriors here and back home in Canada. What an experience and privilege! Praise God!
Campus Crusade is probably the strongest para-church evangelical ministry in Ukraine, and our UFI team viewed this teaching opportunity as a great potential to duplicate rich concepts of biblical counselling throughout Ukraine. From responses of Campus Crusade (Ukraine for Christ) leaders throughout the conference and upon the conclusion of the last lecture, God accomplished significant work in the lives of almost every Crusade leader during our hours together. Our goal was to help them develop a clear biblical framework for dealing with personal problems of the hundreds of people discipled by Crusade each year. After conversion, the new believer is helped to grow spiritually, but many times those with significant personal and interpersonal problems fall by the wayside. Last week many felt “light bulbs” going on and new hope as a result of UFI's teaching. It is very clear that God worked through Ursula's short term teaching trips to plant seeds that are now bearing significant fruit. What a truly amazing experience this was and continues to be! We hope YOU are appreciating the significance of what is happening and that none of it could happen without you! Prayer and financial support back home is essential to pressing on for Christ.
Expansion Possibilities Still Alive & Well ~ Leaders in the Ukrainian cities of Rovna and Sumi first invited UFI to present full day seminars and now are responding with very positive action to those presentations we gave this past Fall. Applications are rolling in and good administration in each city has begun. Our Kyiv office does not have to do it all. Two of our 3 new Teaching Associates, Victor and Maria, are from Rovna (Rivna in Ukrainian), Victor being specifically prepared by UFI for eventual concentration of effort in Rivna. (See “Meet Our Newest TAs” later in this newsletter for more on these fine Ukrainian leaders.)Though no UFI trip has yet been made to Krasnodar Russia, dialog by phone, email, and regular mail (and through our 3 Russian students) continued and all is looking better, though there are always more political concerns there than here, so far. We have received key letters of commitment and so hope to visit there some time this year as well.
Another Visit From President Mike ~ All of the above is exciting and very stressful, but being carefully and prayerfully done, with the close oversight and direction of our team by UFI president Mike Linville. He hopes to visit us all again in March, flying in from America where he wears many hats, one being constant fundraising. (Again, your funds to us go only for the specific survival and ministry of Ron and Linda. The other members of the UFI team are financed various other ways) Please remember the following for yourselves and if (when!?) you talk with others about us, as we WILL be looking for more places to present this work on our next return to Canada. Remember that we know and Ukrainian students and other leaders here (including our Ukrainian staff) say that this is MUCH MORE than Biblical Counselling teaching and training of leaders!!! This is solid, rich theology that leaders are not getting elsewhere and that has already transformed student lives and is beginning to change churches and reach others across Ukraine into Russia.
Team Teaching Moves To Another Level ~ Our UFI goal is to “reproduce teaching teams...” and God gave us a taste of this during the Ukraine for Christ (Campus Crusade) conference. This was the first time that Ron did not carry the whole teaching responsibility on his shoulders. He said there was no question that our four teachers did what one could not do. As well he commented that “It was a joy for me to witness Sergei and Inna in action. Both taught and led counselling workshops with
excellence, insight, precision and passion. They are gifted, but contrite. God enabled our regular UFI work to continue, as at least two experienced members of our team continued working in our office while Sergei and I stayed on site at the conference each day, teaching and meeting with Crusade Staff or other leaders. Ursula stayed on site working with us too while Valya or Artyom took turns coming out to translate. It is exciting that even though Sergei and I were absent for eight days, Tanya and Maria were able to continue reviewing the between module case reports of our UFI students. There were some difficult cases that were referred to Sergei, but for the most part Tanya and Maria were able to handle the work. Some cases were hand delivered to Sergei at the conference site from our office for his review. Success in our work involves training matured “teaching teams.” We are getting a taste of that. Wonderful!”
New Students New Comments? Actually the comments are much the same as those made wherever UFI teaches. Minds are challenged and hearts awakened to energizing truth. Praise God!
Male Student: “…There has been a huge light bulb (that went on)… God has shown me on a deep level how deceitful my heart is - I understand now “Give me [the object of my desire] or I'll die!” (Rachel in Genesis 30:1) I understand that what was governing my life was in direct opposition to God Himself….. This conference has helped me to think biblically about my problems and through to God's solutions. This is a great beginning. I am very thankful that my wife supported me, even in my bad attitude, to come to the conference.”
Female Student: “…From the beginning of the course I realized that I was doing a lot of things wrong. God showed me that there was a lot wrong inside of me. From that point I began looking at myself, rather than being here for training in helping others…. With the teaching of these eight days I feel that I am on the way. I realize that what rules my heart affects how I interpret and apply Scripture. During the conference I do not have adequate time alone to continue to apply the teaching to myself. After the conference I am planning to take the needed time, and I believe, with God's help I will be able to deal with my issues. … With the teaching of this conference I have seen a new way, and I have begun to dig and apply it. I am not used to this digging, but through this conference God has given me hope and help.”
Female Student: “The Campus Crusade discipleship program is a `rapid movement.' This last semester I have seen some people step into this rapid movement and fall to the side…(student then explained inability to help, and in fact alienated the fallen friend)… Here, in this conference, God has shown me that I need to `step down a level.' I used to think of trainers as on one level higher. I myself put leaders on a pedestal. It is hard for me to live up on the pedestal… I am thinking differently about (person) now…. I see the way out now. I have hope now, but I have not thought through in details yet how I will apply this biblical teaching to my discipling relationship with ___”
For Conference Detail Readers ~ (ie, Teachers/Counsellors) Regarding the Ukraine for Christ (Campus Crusade) conference just completed, Ron explained as follows. “I taught material from the UFI Module One for the first four days, with Ursula contributing at points. Ursula taught material from the UFI Module Two for days five to eight, with myself contributing at points. Inna and Sergei also taught short units which were assigned from the module syllabi. In addition, both Inna and Sergei conducted counselling workshop discussion periods, presented case studies, and a few role play segments. Sergei is our senior UFI teaching associate. Inna is a gifted UFI student who is the Director of Women's Ministries for Campus Crusade in Ukraine. Artyom and Valya (from our UFI office) alternated days in the critical work of interpreting for Ursula and myself. Ursula and our UFI team left after the last lecture period, and Inna remained with the Crusade staff to administer the exam the following day. It was wonderful to know Inna had already completed the exam questions herself through the UFI program, and that she was fully capable of handling that task with excellence."
Meet Our Newest UFI Teaching Associates ! (Team total now 7 + Pres. Mike, + me, content in the shadows.)
Maria Vipna: born Rivna Ukraine. (Rovna in Russian / Rivna in Ukrainian) It is where UFI addressed 100 Pastors in November. This lady, violinist, gold medalist in foreign languages, red-diploma lawyer (Social service “Foster Family” specialty) …Bible student, teacher, consultant and now 2nd year UFI student …brings to our team much knowledge, experience, skill, and a heart for Christ and counselling. Years ago she expressed a growing call towards counselling and her pastor responded to her story with : “ If God is doing that, let Him do what He wants to do with your life. May He grant you wisdom”. She took some courses and then heard of UFI.
Now she says "At Ukraine Family Institute I finally found what my soul was seeking for during the last three years."
Victor Petrovich Yakyomenko comes to us from 20 years in the Rivna district, 3 years in the Soviet Army, 5 years in Vinnitsa and 10 years in the Dnepropetrovsk district, before arriving in Kyiv in 2000. He is married and has one 13 year old daughter. This power station engineer-electrician, technical institute engineer-economist, man of a couple of other hats, has his Master of Divinity from Kyiv Theological Seminary (2003). Of the counselling courses in seminary, he said the clearest, most helpful one was by … can you guess? …our Biblical Counselling “pioneer”, “baton passer” (hint: page 1) … the one and only Ursula Muller-Eberhard! Victor writes “I was impressed with the vitality and specificity of the application of the Scriptures to particular problem areas, and the practical case work demonstrated the power of the Gospel to change lives. One girl complaining of evil spirits was helped by Ursula, and I celebrated the work of Christ in this girl's life. Now I am pastor of a new small church, “Emmanuel.” Every day I use principles of biblical counselling in my ministry, and I am experiencing its good fruit.” Victor definitely shares the vision of multiplying teaching teams and looks forward “to continual personal and pastoral growth through my work and study with my team members at UFI”.
Tatiana Marchenko was born right here in Kyiv. She is a mother and Music Conservatory graduate (Theory & History of Music) with years of experience in teaching, business, music library work, and church involvement that led her to a special prayer. Says Tatiana, “Ever since I was a leader of a Women's Bible Study I prayed for the opportunity to study biblical counselling, and after seven years of praying God opened up to me the opportunity to study at UFI” Like many if not most Ukrainians we meet and work with, she has struggled through tragedy and great difficulty but about that she commented “Jesus taught me through these hard periods of my life. Through this He prepared my heart before giving me the opportunity to study counselling at UFI.” This 2nd year UFI student, now new TA, shares that she thoroughly enjoys the learning process and believes “that God is equipping me in this unique way to do counselling that is truly biblical, and then to eventually teach the UFI curriculum”. So, another gifted Ukrainian joins in helping to duplicate teaching teams!
Harris Life ~ Seems to be better and busier each week. As well were the highs of Christmas services / celebrations and extraordinary music played and sung by Roger McMurrin's Kyiv Symphony Orchestra and Chorus (often free concerts with donations for the poor) and lows of poverty / wealth contrasts in Kyiv. Yes, another dead homeless man was encountered beneath the streets since I last wrote you, but this time by Ron. None of the Americans we hang out with seem to run into this but all see suffering and know heartbreaking statistics. For all of us the focus is on spiritually “dead hearts” that need to come alive in Christ, for eternity. Anyway, in between the Harris highs and lows there's a tiny bit more activity and involvement at our Church of The Holy Trinity. The Young Adults meet here every Sunday, we attend (by invitation) the Music Mission Kiev prayer meeting each Saturday (and some of their other meetings) and Ron does a little counselling and teaching, encouraging in connection with our church. New Years Eve Ron and I and Dr. and Mrs Peipon (American paediatrician / elder same church) and their grown children did something really weird. Never did it before and will probably never do it again though it was quite enjoyable. We ended sleeping over at their flat because 12 hours of Lord of The Rings plus TV news breaks, snacks, chatting, then watching some of the fascinating process of making those movies … can set younguns like us a-yawning! It was such a different New Years and Gollum (or however you spell his name) was amazing!!! The Peipon flat looked so nice with American and Ukrainian Christmas decorations, including many gorgeous hand cut paper snowflakes. All in all a nice break from work and our empty nest. Praise God again, for the body of Christ one-anothering one another. (One-anothering? Love, serve, submit, bear, admonish, encourage, and on it goes through scripture.)
Harris Son On The Move! Adam (18) just finished his last exam and now is in transition with searching for a new home by mid February, more work/hours, a Christian University next year, funds for University, and who knows what else. His attitude sound good, humour has not waned, and his heart seems to have leaped to a higher intensity of passion for Christ. Pray for him, Angela, Dawna.
Update February 1st, 2004. He moved to Ottawa and is living with Angela and working in same doctor's office where Angela has been the last few years.
MODULE 5 is NOW! Subject: ADDICTIONS ~ February 9-13. Please pray. Something tough always strikes. The foundational courses are complete. Now the “Issues” ones begin, module 5 being the 1st . We are in UFI year 2! Praise God!!!
Thank YOU! We offer sometimes lengthy Kyiv Calling newsletters out of some obligation but much MORE JOY, and we pray The God of the big picture and smallest details will warm and energize your hearts as you walk in faith with Him, precious Lord Jesus Christ.
“You my brethren were called to be free.
But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature;
rather, serve one another in love. ”
