Exaggerations? Do Ron and Linda exaggerate the BLESSINGS and TRIALS, both of which seem to increase with each Ukraine Family Institute module? Nope. Personally and professionally we just don't, and we pray we never will. Yes we feel things intensely but great care is taken in these newsletters to try to accurately communicate to you and distinguish between facts, feelings, and interpretations. (Also our translators are the best and fully trustworthy.) No one has ever accused us of exaggeration though recently someone here in Kyiv confessed it crossed their mind, but they too could not dispute the facts and what they knew personally of our characters, so declared “Scary but exciting!” then joined with us in increased prayer and praise to God. The challenging tension and positive excitement of God's work over here in Ukraine (and seeping beyond) continues.
Flood, Robbery, Family Pain ~ The office flooded the night before day 1 of Module 4. Our jetlagged Operations Manager Artyom faced another sleepless night dealing with that in time to greet students bright and early the next (er …“that”) morning. UFI president Mike Linville got robbed in Amsterdam just days after module 4 ended. He's fine aside from being understandably upset at the loss which included cameras and all the photos and video planned for UFI promotion and fundraising. Unknown to us, the entire time Module 4 was running, (and being abundantly blessed by God again) really heavy duty hardship, sin, & blameless life/death stuff was going on in UFI related families far from the diligence, laughter, peace and autumn forest beauty of Vorsel, where our two classes had come to meet face to face and learn together for the first time.
UFI Grace & Integrity Challenges ~ Praise God that the above mentioned situations did NOT cause uglies to ooze from the hearts of our UFI staff, but instead revealed lots of Holy Spirit fruit! There were other challenges as well. For the last few months the staff has actually been wrestling in prayer over very difficult staff, student, and financial pressures and challenges, exercising patience in making heart wrenching decisions, and showing a great deal of grace with each individual person and situation. Help is offered every step of the way and even after, with doors left open, if dismissal is the issue. All of the challenges were of course confidential and remain that way as UFI strives to continue to operate with high integrity and deep right compassion found only in Christ. I say that proudly yet in humility, for it is of God and Him alone we boast. We are weak but He is strong. The UFI team (Mike included even though he lives in America most of the time) talks together, prays together, and sweats out the tough stuff together, always seeking to learn and grow through the challenges worked out by God (Ephesians 1:11). There is not one member of our team, who this month has not felt as weak as a trembling captive bird and strong as a lion. It's God's way of equipping and using His children. To the great apostle Paul pleading for more strength and relief from his “thorn”, Jesus said “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness” (2 Corinthians 12: 9 ) Through it all, God has shown us His faithfulness, caused us to marvel at His beauty and blessings, and no doubt was behind some of our freedom fits of laughter. To a westerner the above may seem a fine Christian approach, but to many Ukrainians it is totally new. Time and time again we hear of rigid, militaristic upbringing where achievement was what mattered most and feelings were suppressed. It is an interesting mixture we are seeing in Kyiv now.
Contagious Student Passion! We expected just a few comments. Instead the students poured out even longer, more passionate responses and the longest prayers I've ever heard. This is a newsletter, not a book, so here are a frustratingly few excerpts from a very emotionally moving time of openness, gratitude, and students inspiring students such that even our team guys blinked back tears of gratitude and in their exhaustion felt strange new energy.
(Please pardon the webpage gaps. Time for a new program.)
UFI Student: “A great grace upon this land” ~ I am very glad that, in my lifetime, I have seen UFI come into existence…. For many, many years, in this country, all of this knowledge was killed, destroyed, eliminated. And now a great grace has come upon this land through this institute. We are obtaining the knowledge which will allow us to reach into the depths of the hearts of people, and which will allow us to bring salvation to those people. Truth penetrates the hearts of people, and people can change and grow in the Lord. This program is a completely new perspective, and brings a deep understanding of the truth of the Scriptures. We desperately need this!

UFI Student: “It is impossible to overstate what we are doing here at UFI” ~ This is a huge blessing that we can study here at Ukraine Family Institute. It is impossible to overstate what we are doing here at UFI. What we are learning we can use in our country to bring these truths to the high leadership of our churches. If we do not start providing spiritual support in every region, everything will end up miserably. Yes, we will have more churches and more believers, but they will grow harder toward each other, and they will be similar to the world. My desire is to do everything possible to mobilize our strengths. We need to promote all over our country the Scriptural truths of Jesus Christ that we are learning at UFI.
UFI Student: “Ukraine Family Institute means so much for our country ~ Besides the personal changes in my own life, I now have a different priority in my ministry…my ministry is bearing much more fruit. In our churches, there is a huge problem with many people who cannot get help. They change churches often, or they get excommunicated….Ministers suffer a lot, too. Ministers do not receive good counseling for themselves and they are not able to effectively counsel anyone else. The training that UFI offers needs to take the highest priority, so that we can start making a difference in people's lives. What we are doing will unite churches, and help us to save souls. May God bless those who sponsor this program and make it possible for us to study here!”
UFI Student(s): “I don't think there is anyone here who hasn't changed personally as a result of their studies … at Ukraine Family Institute. Since this program started, God has given me a real passion to help others, and my prayer is that UFI will start a program in my city of Lviv (Lvov) someday.” (Many students have expressed the same desire for their city/region)

2 UFI Students: “They sent us here as a test … to see what would result. The Lord has done a wonderful work, because when we would return from a module, the deacons and pastors would take our materials from us. They were interested and curious as to what we were doing here… now, the senior pastor and several deacons are filling out applications so that they may study at UFI…"
BIG News! ~ Campus Crusade leaders have a very strong influence throughout Ukraine. It is perhaps the largest para-church ministry here. In God's providence, and in a wonderful way that shows His sovereign will through years and many recent months, Ron received an official invitation to teach along with a special lady named Ursula this coming January (Jan 8-16) as part of Crusade's national training curriculum. This is no small door! Remember that UFI's ministry purpose is “duplicating teaching teams to help pastors and church leaders throughout Ukraine and beyond to counsel biblically.” How did this happen? One young Ukrainian, Inna, and one old German, Ursula, walked faithfully for many years, then met one um, er, uhhh “grey haired” Canadian, Ron, here in Kyiv. Inna Girman is director of women's ministries over all of Ukraine, and she is one of our brightest and most gifted students. After moving to Kyiv from Kharkiv last Fall Inna has joined our UFI team for case reviews. She is now very much a friend of our office. One of her big burdens and prayers has been to introduce the UFI teaching to Campus Crusade as part of their establish theological training curriculum for its leaders throughout Ukraine. Ursula (75 years old, a Westminster colleague of Ron's, a biblical counsellor and teacher) has been used by God to awaken many leaders and Christian training institutions in Kyiv and other major centres of Ukraine to the superiority of Scripture in helping people solve life problems. Ursula paved the way for Ron and UFI, handing the baton to them to continue the work “because,” as she says “I am too old to take up the responsibility for a full training program.”
Sooooooo, please begin praying for the formulation of lecture outlines, which will be provided under the name of Ukraine Family Institute. Also pray for the hearts of each Crusade leader who will attend. The impact of such a course is really unimaginable - 1 Cor 2:9 (“No eye has seen …”)
And … Another National Opportunity ~ A new Ukrainian missionary venture! “Light In The East” wants biblical light as taught by UFI. The son of a couple who studies at UFI is planning to launch a missions training program. This Ukrainian man is familiar with many secular and “Christian” counselling approaches. From what his parents have shared with him, and what he has learned from our Teaching Associate Sergei who goes to the same seminary as this young man, he believes UFI strives to be the most consistently biblical in theory and practice and so has specifically requested that UFI provide the introductory counselling course in this national program he is about to begin. Ron and Sergei plan to co-teach this introductory course, possibly with Valya as well. Please pray! UFI has only been operating for 10 months! We need wisdom, health, and continued faithful financial support.
(Photo: In UFI office, but both Teaching Associates taught a bit at Module 4. Sergei loved it!)
Ukrainian Sacrifice & Ownership ~ Determination. We try to be open and never over-promise. Laying the hard facts before the students, Mike & the rest of the staff were totally amazed at sacrificial ideas and options passionately put forth by the students to keep UFI going as it is and to get it spread across Ukraine and into Russia. They fired consistent comments and launched into "sermons" on communist times verses now and how their country needs this teaching soooo much!
One-Day Promotion Seminars ~ On November 14th our team travels by train about 8 hours west to Rovna, where 3 UFI students live. There we'll participate in a regional pastor's conference. We have agreed to present a one-day seminar to church leaders with the goal of enriching their ministries with biblical thinking that goes to the heart. In addition we will help the pastors to understand what we are all about, and what it will take to establish an extension site in their area. Please pray for this
special ministry project for our UFI team. This is the first time that we will travel on overnight train together. Each of us will contribute during the UFI presentation. Many others also desire such a visit.
UFI Student: “Over the last year, eighteen people in his village have committed suicide… including (counsellee's) father and his uncle … UFI has taught me how to understand the problem, and how to help this young man. I am pleased to report that he is using what I have taught him. He is reading the Bible frequently and is seeking God. Now he even has a ministry in the church. He feels compassion toward those who have serious problems, and he helps them.”
UFI Student: “I cannot stop thanking God for putting me in this place!” This material will not leave people indifferent. When we start sharing this material, it really touches hearts, and people show very deep interest. After the classes, the women come up to me and ask when I will be teaching again on these topics. I see how God touches their hearts.
Classes are about 50/50 % MEN / WOMEN.
