Surprise! A word from moi moosh! (Don't worry. It just means “my husband!)
Linda
Sunday, August 31, 2003 ~~~
Greetings from Kyiv
What is the significance of August 31 to us? We landed at Borispil airport to begin a new chapter of our lives in Ukraine. August 31 is our FIRST KYIV MINISTRY ANNIVERSARY! We wanted to mark this time with a short but special email to those God moved to be partners in ministry. We want to thank you for your prayers, your emails, your financial investment in God's work in Ukraine, your hearts, and your friendship in Christ.
As I walk to and from the metro en route to the office, many many times I have thoughts of thankfulness and wonder - even after one year! The word “privilege” comes to mind often.
I am thankful for the unity God has given Linda and myself. What a treasure to know our hearts beat together for this work, this people, this country, this city, our students, our church.

I am thankful for God's healing of my back. Three years ago life in Kyiv would have been impossible. He has preserved me from further injury, and has enabled me to walk for hours on a Saturday when for most of a year in Canada I could not walk well, sometimes not even for 2 minutes, nor sleep through the night.
I am thankful for the wonderful cozy flat that we have, beyond our expectations....for the recent screening for the windows... for hot water almost every moment we want it.... for so many trees around our flat and in the back courtyard, some flowering beautifully each Spring.
I am thankful for the UFI team that God has assembled here in Kyiv, including Mike in Indiana. It is a joy to work with people who love Christ, live for His truth, and care about people.
I am thankful that God has enabled me to “do what I love in the place I love with the people I love.” Yes, it would be a little more of heaven to have our Team Canada here with us - including you.
I am thankful that God has enabled us to move ahead enough in Russian to look back and realize that we actually have moved. To me the language is beautiful, and God has put this love in my heart for the long learning curve.
I am thankful for Tatjana, our Russian teacher, so gifted, devoted and conscientious to her task, and interested in us as people. She is always uplifting and encouraging when we sometimes can't find anything to be encouraged about!

I am thankful for God's provision financially, proving His faithfulness. Many are surprised at how He has raised up a small group in so short a period of time. You need to know that in a real way we represent YOU.
I am thankful for the wonders of Scripture, that open blind eyes, warm cold hearts, make wise the simple, and as a hammer break rocks into pieces. What a privilege (there's the word again!) to be able to devote myself to the training of other people solely with the Word as authority, our light, as our sufficient roadmap!
I am thankful for our students whom God has entrusted to us. What an awesome charge and responsibility, and what a joy to see God bring fruit from their hearts - sometimes right before our eyes. They are your precious brothers and sisters.

INDEPENDENCE
Linda and I survived the crowds (hundreds of thousands?) at the newly rebuilt Independence Square last weekend. It was year number 12 celebrating the independence of Ukraine from Communism. The date was August 24, 1991. Fireworks, clean fun, people of all ages (though many many youth and young adults!) and a sense of true appreciation. Possibly I'm looking through rose coloured classes, so enamoured with our first Independence Day in Ukraine. Possibly I want just to see everything wonderful. But even when I work at balancing the positives with the negatives (such as dirty water, telephone problems, corruption, poor service and selfishness, noise and air pollution, language limitations, and much more) because of God's inward blessing to all the outward things - everything does seem wonderful. Freedom in Christ beautifies all other earthly freedoms.
May God bless you in a special way as you reflect on your part in enabling us to celebrate our one-year Kyiv ministry anniversary.
Love in Christ,
Ron
